Privacy Policy for Custom Sight Words

Information Stored on Your Device

Custom Sight Words stores information needed to provide and personalize learning activities, including:

• Learner profiles: Names, selected avatars, and local profile identifiers.
• Custom content: Word lists and words you enter or import.
• Learning information: Progress, practice results, placement results, and saved practice positions.
• Rewards and personalization: Streaks, awards, collected characters, and room arrangements.
• Settings: App preferences and learning options.

You may use a nickname instead of a child’s full name.

The app does not provide cloud storage operated by us or automatically synchronize learner information between devices.

Depending on your Apple and device settings, app information may be included in device backups. These backups are separate from information received by us.

Audio and Speech

The app plays prerecorded audio included with the app. For words or names without a usable recording, it may use Apple’s on-device text-to-speech technology to generate spoken audio.

The app does not access your microphone, listen to your child, record voices, or use speech recognition. No user voice recordings are collected, stored, or shared by the app.

You can turn learning audio off using the app’s sound control.

Available system voices depend on your device. Downloading additional voices through Apple may require an internet connection.

Camera and Photo Imports

Parents can optionally scan printed words with the camera or select a photo to create a custom word list.

The app processes imported images and recognizes text on your device. Imported images and recognized text are not uploaded to us. Images are used temporarily during importing. Words you review and save become part of your locally stored custom lists.

The photo picker gives the app access to the image you select. Selecting a photo stored only in iCloud may require an internet connection to download it to your device.

You can deny or revoke camera access in your device’s Settings. Other learning activities remain available without camera access.

Purchases

Purchases and purchase restoration are handled by Apple through the App Store. The app communicates with Apple to obtain product information and determine access to purchased features.

We do not receive your payment-card details. Purchase access is separate from learner information. Deleting a learner, removing a custom list, or resetting learning progress does not remove access to purchased features.

Apple processes payment and purchase information under its own privacy practices. For more information, see Apple’s Privacy Policy.

Sharing and Exporting Lists

Parents can choose to export or share custom lists as list files or PDFs.

Exports contain the list’s name and words. They do not automatically include learner profiles or learning progress. However, any personal information you enter in a list’s name or words will be included in that export.

When you share an export, the app or service you select and your chosen recipients may receive it. Their privacy practices apply to how they handle that information.

Deleting a list from Custom Sight Words does not delete copies previously exported, saved elsewhere, or shared with another person.

Notifications

Optional practice reminders are scheduled locally on your device.

You can change notification permissions at any time in your device’s Settings.

Advertising and Analytics

The Custom Sight Words app does not include advertising, advertising tracking, or third-party analytics or crash-reporting software.

Apple may separately process App Store, purchase, usage, or diagnostic information according to the services you use, your settings, and Apple’s privacy practices.

Information processed when you visit our website is addressed separately in the Website Visits section below.

Children’s Privacy

Custom Sight Words is designed for children and families. Children can use its learning activities without creating an online account or sending learner information to us.

Optional purchases, list sharing, and external website links are accessed through the app’s grown-up area, which is protected by a grown-up check.

We do not automatically receive children’s names, custom lists, learning progress, photos, or voice recordings from the app.

Support requests should be sent by a parent, guardian, or teacher. Please avoid including unnecessary personal information about a child in messages, screenshots, or attachments.

Data Retention and Deletion

Learner information remains stored locally until you delete it through the app or remove the app’s local data.

To access the in-app deletion controls, open the learner/avatar menu at the top right, choose Grown-up settings, complete the grown-up check, and select Learners. Use Switch learner first if you need to select a different learner.

Delete a learner

Tap Delete learner, then confirm with Delete Learner.

This removes the selected learner’s profile, name, learning progress, awards, room arrangement, and custom lists belonging to that learner.

Other learners, shared lists retained from earlier app versions, app settings, and purchase access remain. If you delete the last learner, the app creates a blank replacement learner.

Reset learning progress

Tap Reset Learning Progress, then confirm with Reset Progress.

This clears the selected learner’s practice history, learning progress, placement results, streak, awards, collected characters, and room arrangement.

The learner’s name, avatar, and custom lists remain.

Delete a custom list

Tap Delete a Custom List, select the list, and confirm with Delete List.

This removes the list and its associated practice positions, completion records, and history for words unique to that list.

Saved knowledge for words used in other lists and previously earned awards remain.

Delete a shared legacy list

If Delete a Shared Legacy List appears, tap it, select the list, and confirm with Delete List.

This removes the shared list and its associated list-specific records for all learners.

Remove the app’s local data

Open your device’s Settings → General → iPhone Storage or iPad Storage, select Custom Sight Words, and tap Delete App.

Choose Delete App, not Offload App. Offloading removes the app itself but keeps its documents and data.

Copies outside the app

Deleting information inside the app does not remove original photos, previously exported or shared files, support emails, device backups, or Apple purchase records. These must be managed separately.

Temporary export files may remain on your device until the system removes them or the app is deleted.

Restoring an older device backup may restore app information contained in that backup. Device backups can be managed separately through Apple’s backup settings.

Support Email

When you email mycustomsightwords@gmail.com, we receive your email address, message, and any information or attachments you choose to send.

We use this information to respond to your request and provide support. Please avoid including unnecessary personal information about your child in emails, screenshots, or attachments.

We use Gmail, provided by Google, to receive and manage support correspondence. We also use a ChatGPT-assisted workflow, provided by OpenAI, to help organize resolved support conversations and manage email retention and deletion. This workflow may access support-message content and related information to carry out those tasks.

This support workflow is separate from the app. It does not give these services access to learner information stored only on your device.

Google and OpenAI process information under their applicable terms, privacy practices, and service settings. For more information, see Google’s Privacy Policy, OpenAI’s Privacy Policy, and OpenAI’s Google app data controls information.

We retain support correspondence while resolving your request. Our retention process is designed to remove resolved support correspondence from our support mailbox, including Trash, within 90 days after the request is resolved.

You may request earlier deletion by emailing mycustomsightwords@gmail.com.

This 90-day period applies to correspondence in our support mailbox. It does not automatically remove copies held by you or other recipients, provider backup or security records, or information retained in separate services.

In particular, deleting a message from Gmail does not automatically delete information from that message retained in ChatGPT conversations or saved memories. Those records have separate deletion controls and are subject to OpenAI’s retention practices. You may contact us to request deletion of support information we control in those services as well.

Website Visits

Our website is hosted through OpenAI’s Sites hosting service. GoDaddy provides DNS services for our domain, and Cloudflare provides website delivery and security services. Opening our website or online privacy policy from the app takes you to an external browser.

When you visit the website, providers involved in delivering and protecting it may process technical information, such as your IP address, browser and device information, requested pages, and the date and time of your visit. This information helps deliver website content, maintain security, troubleshoot problems, and prevent abuse.

Website security services may use cookies, including Cloudflare’s __cf_bm cookie, to help distinguish legitimate visitors from automated traffic and prevent abuse. For more information, see Cloudflare’s cookie information.

Provider-managed technical records are handled and retained under the applicable service terms and privacy practices. Our 90-day support-email retention period does not apply to those website records. For more information, see OpenAI’s Privacy Policy, Cloudflare’s Privacy Policy, and GoDaddy’s Privacy Notice.

Website processing is separate from learner information stored locally in Custom Sight Words. Opening the website does not automatically upload learner profiles, custom lists, or learning progress from the app.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy when the app or our privacy practices change.

Updates will appear on this page with a revised “Last updated” date.
